German Wines to Make a Strong Showing at Vinexpo 2007

Germany Exhibits in Bordeaux With Riesling in the Vanguard / Federal Ministry Sponsors German Representation

February 6, 2007

Vinexpo is one of the most important trade forums for the world’s wine markets. This year, the tenth time that Germany will participate in Vinexpo, German wine producers once again can demonstrate their ability to compete on a global scale. Germany’s joint stand has been organized and financed by German Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Protection, (BMELV) since 1989. With its 500-square-meter stand, Germany numbers will be among the largest national exhibitors at the Bordeaux fair.

From June 17-21, 2007, some forty German wine producers will present their products at the German stand. In addition, the Deutsches Weininstitut/Mainz (DWI, or German Wine Institute) will call attention to the German presence with a number of activities for trade visitors.

“Given the worldwide increased demand for German Riesling and other varietal wines, we are quite optimistic as we head for Bordeaux this year,” says Steffen Schindler, director of the wine institute’s export marketing department.

Wine exports are important to the German wine industry. From a German point of view, developments in export markets during the past few years have been very encouraging. In the 12-month period from December 2005 to November 2006, the value of wines exported increased by 15% to ca. 550 million Euro. Currently, German wine exporters report double-digit growth in the USA, The Netherlands and Norway.

According to Steffen Schindler, “Germany’s Vinexpo presentation in 2007 will focus on white wines in the medium to premium quality sectors. However, first-rate red wines from German cellars will also be available for sampling at the German stand’s tasting bar. The quality and image of German reds have made enormous gains in recent years.”

Trade visitors are cordially invited to attend the wine institute’s daily program of events featuring internationally renowned experts who will discuss contemporary issues and conduct seminars with tastings.

Last but not least, in light of current wine trends, a large international Riesling evening is in the works. The event will highlight Riesling wines from Germany as well as other countries.
