Horst Sauer Crowned King Of White Wines

September 3, 2004: Franken producer Horst Sauer was officially named White Winemaker of the Year 2004 at the International Wine Challenge Awards Dinner last night in London on what proved to be a spectacular night for German wine.

Horst Sauer also walked away with the German Eiswein Trophy, Botrytis Trophy and Franken Riesling Trophy in addition to 6 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals in this year's competition. Germany collected an impressive total of nine trophies, 27 gold and 23 silver medals.

Charles Metcalfe, founder of the International Wine Challenge (IWC) commented "For me the 2004 results are a triumph for Riesling, and in particular, German Riesling; sharing the success for Germany this year are some great sweet wines in addition to excellent dry wines showing the great diversity of styles that exists within this wine-producing nation."

Horst Sauer was delighted with his win "It is a real honour to be named White Winemaker of the Year 2004, to be recognised on such an international scale is extremely flattering; wine is my true passion - great wines begin with the heart, then the head, then finish back at the heart. Each bottle of wine I make is destined to provide enjoyment and pleasure to those who drink it."

The IWC is one of the most highly respected international wine competitions receiving over 9,000 entries annually. All wines are judged against competitors and tasted by teams of judges from all corners of the globe. For a full list of IWC winners please refer to www.wineint.co.uk

Franken is one of the 13 key wine producing regions in Germany whose wines are distinctive for both the traditional Bocksbeutel - the flat, round-bellied bottle - and the drier styles which prevail. Cool climate and soil types make Riesling the exception and earlier-ripening white grapes, for example Rivaner or Bacchus, the rule. Above all, the region is known for powerful, earthy Silvaner wines.
