Hassle-Free German Wine Country Travel

New York, January 23, 2003

The German Wine Academy is your hassle-free ticket to touring some of the world's most picturesque wine regions. Newly expanded to offer more tours and a more leisurely program, the German Wine Academy has been opening up the world of German wines to tourists from around the globe for nearly three decades.

The German Wine Academy is not a "bricks and mortar" school, but rather a guided wine region tour, traveling throughout several of Germany's famous wine growing regions, visiting world-renowned wineries and estates, and tasting a vast array of wines with the wine makers themselves. The new programs, which include more leisurely activities, including optional spa visits, are less "academic" and much better suited to the diverse interests of today's traveler, while providing a stress- and hassle-free travel package.

For complete information on the German Wine Academy, including 2003 tour schedules, prices, tour itineraries, and a registration form check the web site www.germanwines.de.

Information Booklets for Self-Guided Tours
The German Wine Information Bureau in New York also offers free guides for the more adventuresome traveler, one who prefers to book his or her own tour through wine country Germany. The handy pocket-sized booklets "Vintners to Visit" help tourists identify and locate wine producers' who welcome visitors to their tasting rooms. Booklets are arranged by wine-growing region and contain a wealth of information for each listed winery above and beyond the standard address, phone and fax numbers. Details include languages spoken, tasting hours and fees (if any), if tours are available or advance appointments necessary, and on-site facilities such as restaurants or lodging. All this plus very detailed maps to guide your way and more.

Those interested in wine and local culture should not miss the opportunity to visit a wine festival. Festival season begins in spring and peaks in autumn, historically significant because wineries needed to empty their casks to make room for the new vintage. Today, wine festivals are great opportunities to meet wine-growers and sample their wines with local foods. Whether the wine stands are inside a huge tent, or in the open air, each grower usually presents a dozen or so wines by the glass and by the bottle. The German Wine Institute in Mainz, Germany publishes a free listing/schedule of wine festivals throughout Germany which is available from the German Wine Information Bureau in New York.
